The Council of Governments is an independent, nonprofit association where area leaders address regional issues affecting the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia. MWCOG is a designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the region, and plays an important role as the regional forum for transportation planning. As such, it helps prepare plans and programs that the federal government must approve in order for federal-aid transportation funds to flow to the Washington region.

With DPI MWCOG:

• Conducted an emergency response and evacuation plan for WMATA’s stations
• Used the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) to conduct a series of exercises designed to address critical components of the National Capital Region (NCR) transportation network
• Updated WMATA’s Continuity of Operations Plan
